Basic Safety Training (package) (offshore)

The GWO Basic Safety Course (Global Wind Organisation) is an offshore course aimed at people working in the wind industry. This GWO Basic Safety Course is a course where the delegate gets acquainted with the risks and dangers of working in the offshore wind industry.

During the GWO Basic Safety Training course, the delegate learns not just to recognize the dangers and what to do in an emergency situation. The delegate also develops the skills to provide First Aid, to save themselves and to fight fires. Especially on an offshore wind turbine, there are no nearby emergency services. Therefore, it is very important that people themselves know how to get themselves and others to safety when an emergency arises. The employee will be well prepared by practicing this emergency situation in a setting as realistic as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GWO?

GWO stands for ‘Global Wind Organisation’. It is a non-profit organisation and has provided the Basic Safety Training standards for the wind industry since 2012.

What is the window to join a GWO refresher?

To maintain the original certification date, a certificate or training record can be renewed up to two months prior to expiry. It is still possible to join a refresher course outside of the two months of expiry. In this case, the certificate must carry the new date of certification. A participant is only allowed to attend a refresher course in the specific training module prior to the date of expiry on the current certificate or training records. The validity period is automatically calculated in WINDA by entering the course completion date.

What does the GWO Basic Safety Training Course consist of?

The course consists of 5 modules: GWO First Aid, GWO Working at Heights, GWO Sea Survival, GWO Fire Awareness and GWO Manual Handling. They can be taken separately or together.

How is the GWO Basic Safety Training course taught?

Each separate module of the GWO Basic Safety Training consists of a theoretical and practical part.

What is the purpose of the GWO Basic Safety Training course?

The GWO Basic Safety Training course will allow the delegate to understand the dangers and risks in the wind industry and how to act accordingly in emergency situations. The delegate will also learn how to save themselves, provide First Aid and fight fires. At successful completion of the course, the delegate receives a GWO sticker for in the PSL book. Also the Backoffice will do the upload to WINDA after complete the course.

How long does the GWO certificate remain valid?

The certificate is valid for 2 years. After that, the training must be repeated, so the delegate stays sharp and is made aware of new developments. You can do the GWO Basic Safety Training refresher.

My GWO certificate is expired. What now?

You will have to take the GWO Basic Safety Training course again. Unfortunately, it is impossible to attend refresher courses. The GWO does not allow for dispensation, like the offshore courses.

What does WINDA stand for?

WINDA is the name of the Global Wind Industry Training Records Database. It maintains data on the certification status of GWO Certified Training Providers as well as the status of delegates that have attended courses. The delegate is required to create an account for WINDA, as a sticker and registration are added in WINDA upon succesful completion of a course. No certificate is provided.

Click here to create an account in WINDA. Upon succesful registration, the user receives a WINDA ID. The WINDA ID is required for us to add the GWO Course to the account of a delegate, including the Basic Training Course.

The employer also has the option of creating an account, allowing them to verify the training status of their (potential) employees.
