Shoulder Breadth Measurement Training is an OPITO Standard product designed for personnel who will travel offshore by helicopter and are required to register their shoulder breadth measurement before departure.
Shoulder breadth is recognised as the anatomical dimension that imposes the greatest limitation when exiting through a confined space or push-out window. The measurement is taken across the deltoid muscles using approved callipers and is performed directly against the skin surface to provide a more reliable measurement than measuring over clothing.
Learners with a shoulder breadth of less than 55.9 cm (22 inches) are classified as Regular, while learners with a measurement of 55.9 cm (22 inches) or greater are classified as Extra Broad (XBR). At least 30% of seats on helicopter types are suitable for XBR passengers, although this varies depending on the aircraft.
The training covers passenger size classification, armband assignment and donning, helicopter seating layouts, underwater escape exit positioning and the impact of shoulder breadth measurements on relevant OPITO helicopter training.
The practical measurement requires the learner to stand correctly, position their hands appropriately and remain still while three measurements are taken and recorded. Upon successful completion, the learner receives a shoulder breadth measurement certificate identifying them as Regular or XBR.
