The awareness of Maritime Security Training takes half a day of your time in which you will learn how to be aware of danger on board. After successful completion of this course the participant will receive a STCW (A VI/6-1) certificate. This certificate is valid for life.
Course Content:
- The meaning and consequence of various safety levels
- Knowledge of shipping protection plan, procedures and precautions
- Detect and recognize safety risks
- Detect and recognize, in a non-discriminant way, the characteristics and behavioural patterns of persons that can threaten the safety.
- Techniques that are used in order to circumvent safety precautions.

What is STCW Security Awareness?
STCW stands for the International Convention on Standards, Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. They are a set of minimum qualification standards set by the International Maritime Organisation for all crewmembers of a seaworthy ship. The Security Awareness course is meant to train those employed on a ship to perceive and recognise security risks and will allow them to obtain the STCW (A-VI/6-1) certificate.
What does the STCW Security Awareness course consist of?
The course consists of a multitude of modules, including maritime security threats, security levels and recognising suspicious behaviour.
How is the STCW Security Awareness course taught?
The STCW Ship Security Officer course is taught theoretically.
What is the purpose of the STCW Security Awareness course?
The STCW Security Awareness course will teach the delegate to understand the security dangers and risks while on board of a ship. At succesful completion of the course, the delegate receives a STCW Security Awareness (A-VI/6-1) certificate.
How long does the STCW Security Awareness (A-VI/6-1) certificate remain valid?
The certificate will always remain valid.

The certificate will always remain valid.
Is STCW Security Awareness course mandatory to work in the maritime industry?
Yes. It is a mandatory to have a STCW Security Awareness (A-VI/6-1) certificate in order to hold a job on a ship, if the employee is not charged with security tasks according to the ship security plan.
At what times does training take place?
Usually, this training starts at 7:30 (AM), but it can take place in the afternoon as well. The start time of the course is mentioned on the booking form.
Is food provided for or should I bring this myself?
Lunch is provided by FMTC. Tea and coffee are also available.
What do I need to bring to this course?
If you have a Personal Safety Logbook and/or Seaman book, you must bring them in order to have them updated.
Note that you will be notified of all required materials in the confirmation e-mail when booking the course.
In which language is this course taught?
All our courses are taught in English.

At what time should I book a flight back?
We advise you to book your flight 2 hours after the end of the course, at a minimum.
Do I need a physical examination for this course?
STCW courses require a maritime medical examination.
How do I book a physical examination?
When a physical examination is required, this can be noted on the same booking form. If the course has already been booked, you can send an e-mail or call us to let us know.
When will I have my physical examination if I booked this through FMTC?
After the booking, you will receive a confirmation. In the meantime, a request will be sent to the doctor. The doctor will plan the physical examination. On the following work day at the latest, you will receive the confirmation of your appointment with date, time and location.
