Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is one of the biggest museums Amsterdam offers. It took 10 years of reconstruction for the museum to open again in 2013. In this big monumental building, you can see the world-famous pieces of art like the Night Watch by Rembrandt, paintings from Johannes Vermeer and Frans Hals. Moreover, the museum manages a collection of Delftware, sculptures, Asian art, engravings and other important pieces of art.

Van Gogh Museum

No other place in the world has got so many pieces of the Van Gogh collection. In the recently renovated museum, you can find 201 paintings of the Dutch artist, complemented by art on paper, letters and sketches. Vincent van Gogh was born in 1853 in Zundert, a small village in the south of the Netherlands. He spent a big part of his life in France, where he also died in 1890. He died two days after he shot himself in the chest in a cornfield. Nowadays he is seen as one of the most famous painters from the 19th century.

Anne Frank house

In the Second World War, Anne Frank, together with her family, sought shelter for two years in the rear of a building on the Prinsengracht canal 263. In this house, the father of Anne, Otto Frank, had his company. The entrance of the rear was hidden behind a secret closet, specially made for this purpose. The office personnel helped the persons in hiding and brought food and news ‘from the outside world’. During the period the family were hidden, Anne Frank wrote all here feelings and events that occurred, in her diary. She hoped this diary would be published as a novel after the war. Sadly she never got the finish her diary. On the 4th of august 1944, they were betrayed and the family was deported to various concentration camps. Only Otto Frank survived the war. He made sure Anne’s wish came out. Nowadays, her diary is word-famous. The shelter is accessible for visitors. It is wise to order the tickets online, since the queue for the tickets can be long.

The Canals

Amsterdam is famous for its beautiful canals ever since the 17th century. The historic canals became one of the most unique places in the world. Since 1999 the canals belong to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

400 years of history

The canals in Amsterdam were built during the Golden Century (1600-1700 A.D.) The network of various canals was originally made for the drainage and retrieval of land for an expansion of the city. So the canals were officially made for practical purposes. Later it transformed into a beautiful characteristic of Amsterdam. Rich financers from the business world invested money in order to build houses next to the canals. De Singel, Herengracht, Keizergracht and the Prinsengracht commenced this way. Most of these houses still exist and some can be visited.
