Course Objectives:

• To provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to react effectively in emergency situations at sea.
• To familiarize participants with the use of survival equipment and procedures to enhance chances of survival in the event of abandoning ship.

Course Structure: The course is a combination of classroom instruction and practical exercises, providing a comprehensive learning experience in survival techniques.

Course Outline:

1. Introduction to Personal Survival Techniques
   • Overview of STCW standards and the importance of survival training.
   • Basic principles of survival in maritime emergencies.
2. Emergency Situations
   • Identification of different types of maritime emergencies (e.g., fire, collision, sinking).
   • Understanding alarms and emergency signals.
   • Steps to take during abandon ship scenarios.
3. Use of Survival Equipment
   • Introduction to personal flotation devices (life jackets, immersion suits).
   • Demonstration and practice of donning life-saving appliances.
   • Use of life rafts, including launching, boarding, and handling procedures.
4. Survival Craft and Rescue Operations
   • Procedures for abandoning ship and boarding survival craft.
   • Practical sessions on the use of pyrotechnics, EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons), and SARTs (Search and Rescue Transponders).
   • Techniques for signaling and attracting rescue units.
5. Survival Techniques
   • Essential survival techniques, including group survival tactics and the buddy system.
   • Managing hypothermia and other threats in cold water environments.
   • First aid basics for survival situations.
6. Practical Drills and Simulations
   • Realistic survival drills in a controlled pool environment.
   • Simulations of abandoning ship, deploying life rafts, and rescue operations.
   • Team exercises to reinforce learning and build confidence.

Certification: Participants who successfully complete the course will receive an STCW Personal Survival Techniques certificate, valid internationally as per STCW standards.
