This course is ideal for any applicant who has successfully completed the First Aid & CPR (FMTCRT-197) course, satisfying the First Aid and CPR training requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(i)(l), provided the training was completed within one year of the date of application. Additionally, it meets the Elementary First Aid standards of competence requirements of 46 CFR 11.302(a)(3) and 12.602(a)(3), and the STCW Code Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-3 standards.

The primary objective of the STCW First Aid and CPR training is to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge needed to act swiftly and effectively in emergency situations. The course covers a wide range of topics, beginning with the fundamental responsibilities of a first aid provider and the importance of protecting oneself during medical interventions. Participants will also learn about legal considerations and the critical steps to take when calling for professional medical assistance.
Key practical skills in the course include:
- Performing chest compressions and rescue breaths
- Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) effectively
- Managing cardiac arrest and choking incidents
- Conducting primary and secondary assessments
- Controlling bleeding and managing shock
- Treating head, neck, or back injuries
- Caring for swollen, painful, or deformed limbs, and treating burns and minor injuries
Additionally, participants will gain insights into dealing with altered mental status, breathing difficulties, severe chest pain, and poisoning. The course prepares them to handle heat and cold emergencies efficiently. A significant portion is dedicated to understanding and implementing OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens standards, ensuring participants are well-versed in exposure control plans, housekeeping practices, and methods to mitigate the risks of transmitting bloodborne pathogens.
Participants will also learn about various oxygen delivery systems, including the use of pulse oximetry, and other critical considerations for administering oxygen. The course concludes with a comprehensive review and assessment to ensure all participants have mastered the necessary skills and knowledge.
