The OPITO MIST online course is for new starts to the offshore evironment.The course covers the fundamental safety elements of the offshore oil & gas industry, giving an appreciation of the potential hazards and controls that might be encountered by personnel offshore, in the UK offshore context. Each unit has been designed to focus attention on personal responsibility for safety thus influencing behaviour and attitude towards co-workers, the installation and the environment.
The OPITO MIST certification is valid for 4 years, after which you are reuired to renew the certification in order to remain valid to work in UK offshore waters. This refresher course is the MIST Further course which is valid for four years also and must be renewed every four years in order to remain valid.
Please note that if you are working offshore you are required to hold a valid current offshore health certificate before being allowed to work offshore.
In addition, you must ensure you have a valid identification document issued by a national body (ie Passport) in order to verify your identification when starting the course. You must also ensure you have any verification documents to hand (see reference ‘Prerequisites) for which you will be required to provide an electronic copy for verification purposes, either as .Jpg or .PDF formats.

There are no entry requirements. However, if working offshore, it is expected that this programme will be taken after the OPITO approved BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction Training) course. If this is not the case, then the BOSIET course in addition will be required prior to travelling offshore in order to reinforce some of the knowledge previously gained on the MIST course. There are no specific medical requirements. However, please note that personnel must have a current offshore medical certificate before being allowed to work offshore.

The Minimum Industry Safety Training (or MIST-F) is the OPITO-approved course for industry new starts working in installations offshore in UK waters, and provides informed all round aspects on safety and related hazards in context. This provides a baseline standard of safety for all those beginning working in the offshore environment.
No. As indicated, this course is for new starts to offshore life in UK waters more aware of the hazardous environment on an offshire oil and/or gas installation. This course will also provide you with a valid OPITO Vantage number which ensures you are able to work offshore in Uk and internationally.In addition to the MIST, you will be required to take a Basic Offshore Safety Induction Emergency Training course (BOSIET) as you will not be able to travel without it. The MIST certification is usually taken after the BOSIET course in order to supplement the knowledge learnt on that course. However if you have not yet completed the BOSIET, you will be required to do so before traveling offshore. The Theory element of the BOSIET course is available online. However you are required to attend the BOSIET course at a training centre in order to learn the practical aspects of offshore Safety Training such as First Aid, Fire Training Awareness and HUET – (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training).
Typically 4- 5 hours of e-learning content.

There are five mandatory Units, and an Assessment Test at the end of the course. You may attempt this Test up to three times.
When your course is confirmed you will be sent the validation code and password in order to log in.

On successful completion, you receive an OPITO MIST certificate which is valid for 4 years. You will receive it via the via FMTC Portal.
