More information about STCW Basic Safety Training Refresher

Our STCW Basic Safety Training Refresher course is designed for all seafarers who are required to renew their mandatory safety certification every five years, in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). This refresher training is essential for anyone with designated safety or pollution-prevention duties on board seagoing vessels, including deck and engine crew, stewards, officers, and other operational staff. The course is approved by the national flagstate and meets the requirements of STCW Regulation VI/1 and Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code.

The STCW Basic Safety Training Refresher focuses on the practical modules of the original Basic Safety Training, ensuring that participants maintain the essential skills needed to respond to emergencies at sea. To enroll, participants must provide a valid ID or passport, a medical certificate, swimming gear, a seafarer’s book, and their previous Certificate of Basic Training (BST). Eligibility for the refresher is based on holding a valid Certificate of Competency, proof of at least 365 days of sea service in the past five years, or at least three months of sea service in the past six months. The new certificate will be valid for five years from the expiry date of the previous certificate, not from the course completion date.

Our training includes practical assessments in each module, and successful candidates receive an internationally recognized STCW certificate. It is important to share all required documentation with our customer support team prior to enrollment so eligibility can be verified.

FAQ

STCW stands for the International Convention on Standards, Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. They are a set of minimum qualification standards set by the International Maritime Organisation for all crewmembers of a seaworthy ship. The Refresher course is meant to refresh the participant’s memory and allow them to obtain the STCW certificate again, should it have expired.

The course consists of a multitude of modules, including personal safety and survival techniques, fire fighting and First Aid.

The STCW Basic Safety Training consists of a theoretical and practical part.

The Basic Safety Training Refresher course will refresh the delegate’s knowledge and understanding of the dangers and risks while on board of a ship and how to act accordingly in emergency situations. The delegate will also learn how to save themselves, provide First Aid and fight fires. At succesful completion of the course, the delegate receives a STCW certificate.

The certificate is only valid for 5 years. After that, the basic training must either be repeated or a refresher course must be taken.

You will either have to take the STCW Basic Safety Training course again or attend a refresher course. You should be able to take a refresher course, as long as you are in possession of a certificate of competency. Are you uncertain whether you can take the refresher course? Please contact us via info@fmtcsafety.com or call +31 (0) 85 130 74 61
