Our STCW Designated Security Duties training is designed for seafarers who are assigned specific security responsibilities on vessels subject to the ISPS Code. This course, also known as Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD), is essential for those involved in tasks such as access control, monitoring restricted areas, handling security equipment, escorting visitors or contractors, and supporting the implementation of the Ship Security Plan. The training meets the requirements set out in STCW Regulation VI/6, Paragraph 4 and Section A-VI/6-2, ensuring compliance with international maritime security standards.
This course is mandatory for deck and engine ratings with security assignments, catering or hotel staff on passenger ships with restricted area access, and cadets or trainees with designated security duties. It builds on basic Security Awareness by providing practical, operational knowledge and skills needed to effectively carry out security tasks on board. The training is approved by the national flagstate and recognized under both STCW and the ISPS Code.
Upon successful completion, participants receive a certificate that is widely accepted in the maritime industry. While the STCW standard does not specify an expiry date, many flag states and companies recommend renewing the certification every five years. Some employers or authorities may require refresher training, especially if there has been a lapse in maritime service or a change in company or vessel. To enroll, participants should bring a valid passport or government ID and, if applicable, their seafarer’s book. Assessment typically includes a written or multiple-choice test, and some centers may include practical scenarios or case studies.
