Before you start a STWC training course, you will need to undergo a maritime medical examination. A maritime medical examination is also required for those working at sea or on local waters/rivers. This required maritime medical examination is carried out by specialised doctors.

Maritime medical examination

The maritime medical examination involves answering a questionnaire and a physical check, testing your health in relation the work you do. At the end you will be advised with the results. In normal circumstances the maritime medical examination is valid for two years. It is possible to be checked and approved under certain conditions whereby you will have to be seen by the same doctor after 1 year.

The maritime medical examination contains the following:
• Questionnaire
• Biometric test: measurement of length, weight, checking of pulse and blood pressure.
• Eye test ( near, far and colour blind test)
• Urine sample test
• Possible blood test

Required documents

For the maritime medical examination, please bring the following documents:
• Seaman’s book
• A valid passport
• Medication if you are taking any
• Glasses or contact lenses if worn

As of the 1st October changes will be made to the maritime medical examination and you are no longer required to bring a X-Thorax image/photo. From the 1st October onwards, it depends on in which country you are working. Click here to find out which countries require a thorax photo.

If you wish to complete a medical examination, you can book this when filling out the booking form. It is not possible to book a separate medical examination.
