More information about STCW Ship Security Officer

Our STCW Ship Security Officer (SSO) training is designed for officers who are designated as the Ship Security Officer on board ISPS-compliant vessels. This course is mandatory under the STCW Convention for those responsible for implementing and maintaining the ship security plan, conducting security inspections, and coordinating with Company Security Officers (CSO) and Port Facility Security Officers (PFSO). The training ensures that participants are fully prepared to lead security measures and respond effectively to security threats at sea.

The STCW Ship Security Officer course is approved by the national flag state and meets the requirements of STCW Regulation VI/5 and Section A-VI/5, as well as the ISPS Code. It is intended for deck officers such as the Master, Chief Mate, or other senior officers who are officially appointed as SSO by their shipping company. Entry requirements typically include a valid STCW certificate of competency (OOW or higher), proof of completed Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD), and relevant sea service experience. Participants should bring a valid passport or government ID, STCW CoC, medical fitness certificate if required, and seafarer’s book if applicable.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a certificate recognized under STCW and accepted by flag state authorities. While the certificate is valid indefinitely under STCW, many flag states and companies require revalidation every five years to ensure compliance with the latest ISPS Code and company procedures. Refresher training is strongly recommended and may be required by certain administrations or company safety management systems, especially to address new and emerging maritime threats.
