Our STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care training is designed for seafarers who are responsible for providing both immediate first aid and advanced medical care on board vessels. This course is essential for those designated to respond to medical emergencies at sea, including deck and engine officers, watchkeepers, ship safety personnel, and especially Masters or designated officers on ships that do not carry a medical doctor. The training is fully approved by the national flag state, ensuring compliance with international maritime standards.
The STCW Medical First Aid (MFA) component prepares participants to deliver prompt and effective first aid in the event of accidents or illness on board, building on basic first aid skills and focusing on stabilizing casualties until further help is available. The STCW Medical Care (MC) section is tailored for those who must provide ongoing medical care during extended voyages, covering advanced assessment, treatment, and telemedical communication when professional medical support is not immediately accessible.
Both courses meet the requirements of STCW Regulation VI/4 and Sections A-VI/4-1 and A-VI/4-2 of the STCW Code. Certification is typically valid for five years, and while refresher training is not mandated by STCW, it is strongly recommended every five years and may be required by some flag states or employers. Prerequisites include a valid Certificate of STCW Basic Safety Training and, for the Medical Care course, a Certificate of Medical First Aid. Participants should bring valid identification and their seafarer’s book if applicable. The training must be retaken in full every five years to maintain compliance.
