Our STCW Medical First Aid course is designed for seafarers who are designated to provide immediate first aid in the event of an accident or illness onboard. This training is essential for all officers, designated crew members responsible for first response, and masters of smaller vessels where no further medical care provider is assigned. The course is approved by the national flag state and meets the requirements of STCW Regulation VI/4, Paragraph 1 and STCW Code Section A-VI/4-1. It builds on basic first aid knowledge and prepares participants to stabilize casualties until higher medical care is available.
The STCW Medical First Aid course is mandatory for seafarers before being assigned any role involving first aid responsibilities, especially on seagoing ships operating internationally or outside close coastal areas. It is often a prerequisite for attending the STCW Medical Care (MC) course. Upon successful completion, participants receive a certificate that is valid for five years, in accordance with flag state and company policies. While a refresher course is not explicitly required by STCW, it is strongly recommended every five years, particularly for officers responsible for health and safety or those working on vessels with limited medical access. Some flag states or employers may require periodic updates.
To enroll, participants must bring a valid passport or ID, a Certificate of Basic Training (BST) as a prerequisite, and a seafarer’s book if applicable. Comfortable clothing is recommended for practical sessions. The course must be retaken every five years to maintain certification, as there is no separate refresher version.
