More information about STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care

Our STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care training is designed for seafarers who are responsible for providing both immediate first aid and advanced medical care on board vessels. This course is essential for those designated to respond to medical emergencies at sea, including deck and engine officers, watchkeepers, ship safety personnel, and especially Masters or designated officers on ships that do not carry a medical doctor. The training is fully approved by the national flag state, ensuring compliance with international maritime standards.

The STCW Medical First Aid (MFA) component prepares participants to deliver prompt and effective first aid in the event of accidents or illness on board, building on basic first aid skills and focusing on stabilizing casualties until further help is available. The STCW Medical Care (MC) section is tailored for those who must provide ongoing medical care during extended voyages, covering advanced assessment, treatment, and telemedical communication when professional medical support is not immediately accessible.

Both courses meet the requirements of STCW Regulation VI/4 and Sections A-VI/4-1 and A-VI/4-2 of the STCW Code. Certification is typically valid for five years, and while refresher training is not mandated by STCW, it is strongly recommended every five years and may be required by some flag states or employers. Prerequisites include a valid Certificate of STCW Basic Safety Training and, for the Medical Care course, a Certificate of Medical First Aid. Participants should bring valid identification and their seafarer’s book if applicable. The training must be retaken in full every five years to maintain compliance.

FAQ

STCW stands for the International Convention on Standards, Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. STCW describes the qualification standards set by the International Maritime Organization for all crewmembers of a seaworthy ship. The Medical First Aid & Medical Care course is meant to train those employed on a ship to provide First Aid and to provide medical care to others when there is no medical support available. This course allows delegates to obtain their STCW Medical First Aid (A-VI/4-1) and STCW Medical Care (A-VI/4-2) certificates.

The course consists of a multitude of modules, including basic medical care, checking vital functions of the body, providing First Aid and using medical equipment on board.

The STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care course consists of a theoretical and practical part.

The STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care course will teach the delegate how to recognise injuries and (infectious) diseases and how to treat them while being on board of a ship. The delegate will also learn how to transport wounded, maintaining a medical administration and using medical equipment. At succesful completion of both parts of the course, the delegate receives both a STCW Medical First Aid (A-VI/4-1) and a STCW Medical Care (A-VI/4-2) certificate.

The certificate is only valid for 5 years.

You will either have to take the STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care course again or attend a refresher course. You should be able to take a refresher course as long as you are in possession of a certificate of competency. If you are still in possession of a valid certificate for Medical First Aid, you are only required to take the Medical Care course.

The STCW Medical First Aid (A-VI/4-1) certificate is mandatory for everyone who works on board of a ship. The STCW Medical Care (A-VI/4-2) certificate is only mandatory for the captain of a ship and for the officer responsible for the medical team.

Training starts at 7:30 a.m. and will be finished at 4:00 p.m.

Lunch is provided by FMTC. You can choose from freshly made sandwiches, snacks, soup and fruit. Tea and coffee are also available.

You will need a valid Basic Safety Training certificate. If you have a Personal Safety Logbook and/or Seaman book, you must bring them in order to have them updated. The required safety materials are provided for by FMTC.

Note that you will be notified of all required materials in the confirmation e-mail which you will receive after booking the course.

All of our courses are taught in English.

All the green dates on the calendar on the course page are available. This is a real-time display of the available dates.

We advise you to book your flight 2 hours after the end of the course, at a minimum.

STCW courses require a maritime medical examination.

When a physical examination is required, this can be noted on the same booking form. If the course has already been booked, you can send an e-mail to info@fmtcsafety.com or call +31 (0) 85 130 74 61 so we can help you further.

After the booking, you will receive a confirmation. In the meantime, a request will be sent to the doctor. The doctor will plan the physical examination. On the following work day at the latest, you will receive the confirmation of your appointment with date, time and location.

When you would like to book a hotel, this can be indicated on the booking form. If the course has already been booked, you can send an e-mail to info@fmtcsafety.com or call +31 (0) 85 130 74 61 so we can help you further.
