During the combination course STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care, the shipping healthcare is our main focus. The course Medical Care teaches you to adequately act to accidents and illnesses when no external medical support is available. This course exists for employees with the responsibility of the medical care on board of a ship. The captain is initially responsible for this and should therefore be able to support the victim with medical support at any time. Next to the captain, another employee is often appointed as responsible for the medical care on board.

When you find yourself in the Dutch territorial sea or a territorial sea adjacent to this zone, you ought to be in possession of a valid STCW / ILT certificate Medical First Aid. However, when you are outside of these zones, you also have to be in possession of a valid STCW / ILT certificate Medical Care. After finishing the combination course STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care you receive both certificates, so that you are able to apply the right medical aid when needed.

Course Content:

The content of this course consists of the following:

  • General introduction shipping healthcare
  • (Physical) examination according to a RMA-questionnaire
  • Vital functions check according to the SRABCDE model
  • (Infection) diseases and wound treatment on board according to ‘test’ victims
  • Injury to the human musculoskeletal system and neck injury
  • Basic Life Support
  • Transporting wounded
  • Evacuation per helicopter
  • Medical equipment on board
  • Medical administration and contacting Radio Medical Service
  • Administering injections
  • Administering IV
  • Stitching up a wound

Say for instance that you are in possession of a valid certificate Medical First Aid and you also want to obtain the Medical Care certificate. At FMTC, you won’t have to attend to the whole course. You can also opt to only attend to the Medical Care course. Or only cruise on the territorial sea. In this case, you can choose to simply follow the Medical First Aid course at FMTC. What is STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care?

STCW stands for the International Convention on Standards, Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. They are a set of minimum qualification standards set by the International Maritime Organisation for all crewmembers of a seaworthy ship. The Medical First Aid & Medical Care course is meant to train those employed on a ship to provide First Aid and to provide medical care to others when there is no medical support available and will allow them to obtain the STCW Medical First Aid (A-VI/4-1) and STCW Medical Care (A-VI/4-2) certificates.

What does the STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care course consist of?

The course consists of a multitude of modules, including basic medical care, checking vital functions of the body, providing First Aid and using medical equipment on board.

How is the STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care course taught?

The STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care course consists of a theoretical and practical part.

What is the purpose of the STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care course?

The STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care course will teach the delegate how to recognise injuries and (infectious) diseases and how to treat them while on board of a ship. The delegate will also learn how to transport wounded, maintaining a medical administration and using medical equipment. At succesful completion of both parts of the course, the delegate receives both a STCW Medical First Aid (A-VI/4-1) and STCW Medical Care (A-VI/4-2) certificate.

How long do the STCW Medical First Aid (A-VI/4-1) and the STCW Medical Care (A-VI/4-2) certificates remain valid?

The certificate is only valid for 5 years.

My STCW Medical First Aid (A-VI/4-1) and/or STCW Medical Care (A-VI/4-2) certificates is expired. What now?

You will either have to take the STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care course again or attend a refresher course. You should be able to take a refresher course, as long as you are in possession of a certificate of competency. If you are still in possession of a valid certificate for Medical First Aid, you are only required to take the Medical Care course.

Is STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care course mandatory to work in the maritime industry?

STCW Medical First Aid (A-VI/4-1): Yes. It is mandatory for everyone to have an STCW Medical First Aid (A-VI/4-1) certificate in order to hold a job on a ship.

STCW Medical Care (A-VI/4-2): No. It is not mandatory to have an STCW Medical Care (A-VI/4-2) certificate, except for the captain and the officer responsible for the medical team.

At what times does training take place?

Training starts at 7:30 (AM) and will be finished at 16:00 (4:00 PM).

Is food provided for or should I bring this myself?

Lunch is provided by FMTC. Tea and coffee are also available.

What do I need to bring to this course?

You will need a valid Basic Safety Training certificate. If you have a Personal Safety Logbook and/or Seaman book, you must bring them in order to have them updated. The required safety materials are provided for by the FMTC.

Note that you will be notified of all required materials in the confirmation e-mail when booking the course.

In which language is this course taught?

At what time should I book a flight back?

We advise you to book your flight 2 hours after the end of the course, at a minimum.

Do I need a physical examination for this course?

STCW courses require a maritime medical examination.

How do I book a physical examination?

When a physical examination is required, this can be noted on the same booking form. If the course has already been booked, you can send an e-mail or call us to let us know.

When will I have my physical examination if I booked this through FMTC?

After the booking, you will receive a confirmation. In the meantime, a request will be sent to the doctor. The doctor will plan the physical examination. On the following work day at the latest, you will receive the confirmation of your appointment with date, time and location.
