New STCW code in effect

02 January 2017

From 1 January 2017, all seafarers will have to deal with an addition to the STCW code. From 1 January 2017, seafarers must undergo training once every five years to increase the crew’s chances of survival in the event of an incident.

Manila Amendments

In 2010, the Manila Amendments were finalized in an IMO context. It concerns an update of the STCW code (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for seafarers), which has not undergone a major renewal since 1995. In addition to attention for, among other things, new navigation and communication equipment, responsible alcohol consumption and rest and working hours; the Manila Amendments contain new guidelines for training seafarers.

The new convention came into effect on January 1, 2017, from now on all seafarers must undergo certified training every five years, in which they are trained to cope with calamities and to bring themselves and colleagues to safety.

What does this mean to you?

From January 1, 2017 you can only follow a STCW refresher course if you are in possession of a valid STCW certificate which is not older than 5 years or if you are in possession of a valid certificate of competency. Is the certificate older than 5 years and do you not have a valid certificate of competency? Then unfortunately you can no longer participate in the STCW refresher course. You must then follow the basic course of the desired STCW course.
